Amid Japan's efforts to base its viability in science and technology, material science and technology R&D will not only add to new scientific views but the cultivation of new materials and the manufacturing and processing technology for them will spur reforms in applicable fields and related technologies. As this field has such a huge impact on economy and society, it is widely expected to serve as the driving force for future socioeconomic, scientific and technological developments.
This prize will be awarded for remarkable contribution to development and practical application in material-related fields through research, technical development and the creation of methods pertaining to a wide variety of materials and their related applications. This includes nanodevices and materials for infocommunication systems; high-grade environmental conservation and energy utilization materials; medical microsystems and materials; material that utilizes biological mechanisms; extreme-environment-oriented materials; metals; organic, inorganic, magnetic and dielectric materials; and ceramics, devices and structural materials.
With a wide focus on material science and technology, this field will include, as a minimum, areas related to the following items.

Example

  • Nanotechnology materials (carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, thin films, etc.)
  • Functional materials, composite materials, superconductivity and related materials, organic semiconductors, functional fibers, etc.
  • Light-related materials (photosensitive, light-emitting, light-guiding, catalytic, control-oriented materials and others)
  • Simple electronic elements, electronic and optical devices and micromachines, as well as their application to and the technology for integrated devices, electronic devices (displays, etc.), machinery, and various types of equipment and apparatuses
  • Innovative structural and composite materials, materials that withstand high or low temperatures, and environmental conservation-oriented materials
  • Structural, lightweight, ultra-strong and other materials, as well as their application to and the technology for equipment, buildings, and environmental measures
  • Materials applying biological functions and the technology involved
  • Other new materials and related technology
