Semiconductors constitute the leading edge of modern-day material science. The core of contemporary science and technology, semiconductors have served to expand their very frontiers. With technology capable of handling the molecular and atomic levels already achieved, semiconductor technology constitutes the main field in leading-technology industries: it is a technology that supports core sections, particularly for the data processing, collection and control of all kinds of devices and equipment, beginning with information and communication devices. With its expansion to large-scale industry, the semiconductor has become a basic technology and mainstay industry that supports Japan's society and economy.
This prize will be awarded for contribution, in the semiconductor field, to the progress, development and practical application of semiconductor technology through R&D and the development of methods pertaining to semiconductor materials, semiconductor process technology (including devices and manufacturing systems), semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, and the equipment and systems to which they are applied.
In addition to the traditional semiconductor field, the scope of the prizewinning field will include such items as the following.

Example

  • Materials that utilize semiconductor properties (including carbon nanotubes, organic semiconductors and the like) and materials that pertain to the devices, integrated circuits, etc, listed below
  • Devices (electronic elements, optical elements, MEMS, sensors, etc.) and integrated circuits (microprocessors, system LSI, memory, etc.)
  • Related design technology, manufacturing process technology, manufacturing devices, and reliability and evaluative analysis technology
  • Devices and integrated circuits that cultivate new fields of application and the application technology involved
  • Individual or integrated semiconductor devices or the like with architecture or middleware that will have a major impact on information systems (information processing systems, communications, device control, etc.)
